Tubal Ligation in Rockville and Germantown, MD

Also referred to as “having your tubes tied,” tubal ligation is a safe and effective type of permanent birth control. During tubal ligation, the fallopian tubes are cut, tied, or blocked to permanently prevent pregnancy.

Tubal ligation is performed after childbirth or in combination with another abdominal surgery, such as a C-section.

  • Vaginal Childbirth – If you have a tubal ligation after vaginal childbirth, your doctor will likely make a small incision under your belly button, providing easy access to your uterus and fallopian tubes.
  • C-Section – If you have a tubal ligation during a C-section, your doctor will use the same incision that was made to deliver your baby.

How Does Tubal Ligation Work?

During this procedure, a needle or incision in your belly button to inflate your abdomen with gas, a laparoscope is inserted, and a second small incision in your abdominal wall is made to seal the fallopian tubes.

After the procedure, it prevents an egg from traveling from the ovaries through the fallopian tubes. It also blocks sperm from traveling up the fallopian tubes to the egg.

What Should I Know About Tubal Ligation?

  • It permanently prevents pregnancy, so you no longer need any type of birth control
  • Tubal ligation doesn’t affect your menstrual cycle
  • Tubal ligation can decrease your risk of ovarian cancer
  • There can be potential risks, including complications from incisions in your abdomen

What Can I Expect After Tubal Ligation?

If you decide to get your tubes tied at the same time as childbirth, it will rarely extend your hospital stay. If the procedure is done at another time, you are usually allowed to go home several hours after a tubal ligation.

After the procedure, you may:

  • Need to avoid heaving lifting and sex
  • Avoid bathing for 48 hours and keep the incision dry
  • Avoid straining or rubbing the incision
  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Gassiness or bloating
  • Resolve normal activities as you feel comfortable doing so

Although it is a permanent form of birth control, the younger you are, the more likely it is to fail. Fewer than 1 out of 100 women will get pregnant in the first year after the procedure, and there is a risk of having an ectopic pregnancy, or an egg implanting outside the uterus.
